In 1997, DeGeneres came out  as a lesbian. The big news of her sexual orientation sparked much interest by American magazines. The attention of the media coverage stunted DeGeneres' professional career and left her "mired in depression"

In her book Love, Ellen, DeGeneres's mother describes being initially shocked when her daughter came out as a lesbian, but has become one of her strongest supporters, an active member of Parents & Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG

And her and her mother are big supporters of the national coming out day. http://www.hrc.org/resources/entry/national-coming-out-day

With more of the famous influences, coming out and saying that they support gays, the world is becoming more tolerant and eceppting of the fact that some people are gay.

Recently there has been a song written about, gay marriage and gays having the right to be who they are and not having to hide who they are. By malcomemore, Ryan Lewis and Mary lambert - same love.

In the song the artists are talking about the stereotyping of society today, by saying that he thought he was gay because he could draw and kept his room straight. This song is about same love, and by saying same love they are meaning that every kind of love is the same, as such the same as black and white different religions and the different countries you fight for.

They are going out and saying that the “gay” society is being cast by stereotypes that the youth of today are coming up with. Having char assists cast by stereotypes and having a perceived idea of what it all means, to be a homosexual. Then they are going on to saying that people from the church community is saying that they can be cured from being a gay by getting treatment and religion because it is that much of a abomination to them.

They also say that we are fearing what we do and what we don’t know and that we are forgetting that the bible also says that god loves all his children and he creates them the way he intended them to be.

It also gives you an insight of how the gay community is feeling by saying that they can’t change what they are, even if they try to or wanted to, they just cant.

The word ‘gay’ is rooted in hate, many people would take it as such a big embarrassment to be called gay, but can you imagine how that makes the people who are actually gay feel/ it would make them feel like they are  embarrassment to the world today.

And that the gay community are not allowed to mix with the societies ‘normal or regular’ people just because they are different. They also say that everybody deserves to have rights and freedoms no matter whom or what you are and what you believe in.

One important line in the song is “Progress not goes back or pauses” to me this is important because, it is saying that we have to keep moving forward and becoming more welcoming to the gays.

Another important bit of the song is saying that people would rather die than be who they are, this line is sadly true, the number of gays committing suicide, attempted suicide have tripled in the last 20 years. Is this because society has become harsher or more hurtful?
